The Things You Can Learn From Gift Registries
There are times when we realize that we may not know a person as well as we thought we did. When you go to shop for a shower gift it could be one of those times. We you go and get the registry list from the store guest services and start browsing through it you may start to wonder if you got the right one.
Some things simply do not add up initially. You begin to see what sort of life they are expecting with their newborn. You start to know more about what they really value in life. This expecting mother does not seem on paper as though this is the same woman you have known forever.
She does not wear skirts, or make up, or heels. Her ears are not pierced. Nothing about her is particularly feminine, yet at the top of that list you see ladybug baby bedding. You are wondering if this is really the same person. Maybe someone else put together the registry for her.
Do you really know her? She complains about the mark up price in stores. She would never pay full price for anything. She is the queen of thrift store shopping. There is designer baby bedding on her list though. It does not seem as though this all adds up with the image you have of your dear friend.
Your friend is unorganized, scatter-brained, and hardly can plan for dinner, let alone anything else. She has always been happy to fly by the seat of her pants. Convertible baby furniture is not something that seems like a likely fit for her lifestyle, but there it is on the list. In a one shopping trip your image of her has been thrown out of the window.
The two of you text each other off and on all day long. You have known each other for what seems like forever. Now, the gift registry reveals much to you about her and her hopes for her life with her baby. It would seem that these registries do more than just ensure that you get what you want or need, while avoiding duplicates. That is really only the tip of the iceberg.
As you are shopping for your friend give this another thought, maybe the registry shows the person your friend is becoming. Parenthood is for most a life-changing thing. You may know your old friend very well, but have much to learn about the person she is becoming.
